Dr. Domingos Machado

Domingos Machado is widely recognized as one of the leading pioneers of kidney transplantation in Portugal. He spent the majority of his professional career at Santa Cruz Hospital, where he served from its founding until 2020, holding a range of positions and leadership roles—from resident physician to Director of the Nephrology Department and Coordinator of the Kidney Transplant Unit.

Kidney transplantation and clinical nephrology have been the central focus of his career. He is a founding member and former President of the Portuguese Society of Transplantation (2002–2005), served as President of the First Luso-Brazilian Congress on Transplantation (2002), President of the First Luso-Brazilian-Spanish Congress on Transplantation (2014), and Honorary President of the Renal Meeting (2019). His extensive academic contributions include more than 100 presentations at national and international conferences, as well as numerous scientific publications, book chapters, and research studies, primarily focused on the technical and ethical aspects of transplantation.

Dr. Machado was named an Honorary Member of the Portuguese Society of Nephrology in 2021 and the Portuguese Society of Transplantation in 2022. In 2023, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Distinguished Services by the Portuguese Ministry of Health in recognition of his outstanding contributions to healthcare.

He also made history as Portugal's first non-directed living kidney donor.
