Tiago R. Magalhães

Tiago R. Magalhães is a bioinformatics and genomics leader with more than 20 years of experience spanning academia, industry and entrepreneurship. He is the Vice President of Bioinformatics at M42, where he plays a central role in the Emirati Genome Program, one of the world’s largest population genomics efforts. At M42, Tiago leads the development of advanced computational platforms that turn vast datasets, including the world’s largest long read genome and genome wide methylation cohorts, into insights that bring prediction, prevention and precision into healthcare.
 
His career has taken him across continents and disciplines. Before joining M42, he was Director for Bioinformatics at Genuity Science in Ireland, where he managed large scale genome studies and collaborations with global pharmaceutical partners. Earlier, he was Executive Director of CCMAR in Portugal, leading a 300-member marine science institute. His research has contributed to progress in autism, diabetes, cancer and ancestry genomics, with work published in leading journals including Nature, Neuron, Cell Systems, PLoS One and Human Genetics.
 
Alongside his scientific leadership, Tiago has built a strong track record in entrepreneurship and innovation. He founded a personalized medicine start up, has advised venture capital and biotech firms, and serves as an expert reviewer for the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programs.
 
Tiago studied in Portugal, Germany, Italy and the United States. He holds a PhD in Cell Biology and Neurodevelopment from the University of Coimbra and the University of California, Berkeley, as well as an Executive MBA in Management of Research Infrastructures from the University of Milano Bicocca.
